On October 26, 2008, my husband proposed to me with a Polaroid on Catalina Island. I must say, he did such an amazing job on surprising me and executing the event that I still talk about it 4 years later!
We had planned a day trip to Catalina. The first ferry ride over was at 7am and the minute we woke up at 5:30am, Jason had a Polaroid camera out taking pictures. I thought it was a little strange, but I’m always game for silly photos. On our ferry ride there, I told him I was giving up on annoying him about proposing to me. After being together for 5.5 years, I had been antsy about taking the next step in our relationship. Again, that morning, I had given up. I’m sure he was sinisterly laughing inside his head.
When we arrived at the island, we bought some sandwiches for our kayaking adventure. We put on our wet suits and Jason wore his swimming trunks over it. I thought it was weird, but shrugged it off. We got on our kayaks and paddled ourselves about a mile up the shore onto a private shore. After some attempted snorkeling, we stopped to have lunch. We took some more pictures and when a pack of Polaroids was finished, he handed me another. Little did he know, I always open my Polaroid packs upside down. Well, this pack was taped closed from the bottom. I thought to myself, “Hhhmm.. weird. I hope this pack still works. Somebody must’ve returned it or accidentally opened it.” I reloaded it and he suggested we take a self-portrait of the both of us. I pushed the button and out pops a previously exposed Polaroid which said, “Will you marry me” written in sand. I was so confused and asked aloud if this was somebody’s. A couple of seconds later, it clicked and I turned around. He was on his knees with a ring (that was hidden in his swimming trunks) and I screamed with joy and happily cried like I have never before! He was so overwhelmed by my reaction and tearing up, all he could say was, “Well, will you?” “Of course!”, I screamed. Needless to say, I was on cloud nine for a very long time.
On our way back from kayaking, he revealed to me that this day trip was actually a weekend trip. He had asked my boss (at the time) for Monday off. He set us up in a beautiful bed and breakfast facing the ocean. He reserved a table at a delicious restaurant and reminded me to call my mom first, since she was the first to know about his plans and asked for my hand in marriage. I had no idea that my husband was so romantic and capable of surprising me in such a beautiful way! Every time we have our less happy moments, all I have to do is remember this day! I know I am very lucky to have such an remarkable partner in life.
